The saga of The Lion King is set in motion in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the young Prince Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the deeds of his evil uncle Scar and his desire to rule the Pride Lands and become ruler himself. The first half's series of occurrences leads to the young prince's banishment from his home and the account of his consequent homecoming to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.
The musical, since its inception, had to develop extensive research on real African civilization and history given the play's context. The story itself is actually taken from real African leaders and factual happenings – Simba being the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Imperial Mali who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, particularly costume design, which resulted in a precise Broadway production of The Lion King. The costumes in particular are gracious representations of a few traditional groups in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s outfit in the musical which is actually inspired by Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the late 1994 movie, the remarkable musical score written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African inspiration, with the musical even adding numbers with lyrics that are sung either partially or fully in African languages such as Swahili and Zulu.
