The saga of The Lion King begins in a vast savanna territory in Africa; based in The Pride Lands, the young heir Simba is destined to succeed as King, before tragedy strikes because of the actions of his jealous uncle Scar and his impulse to rule the Pride Lands and become ruler himself. The first half's sequence of occurrences leads to Simba's banishment from The Pride Lands and the account of his consequent return to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.

The 1997 Broadway play, since its creation, had to develop extensive research on real African culture and historical texts given its content. The story itself is actually founded on previously existing African heroes and factual events – Simba actually equates to the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Malian Empire who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female in Broadway history to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, specifically with costume design, which paved the way for a precise staging of the musical. The outfits alone are gracious depictions of some indigenous people in Africa, an exemplification of which is Simba’s garb in the musical which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi fighters' attire. Just like the late 1994 motion picture, the iconic musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African heritage, with the live adaptation even including compositions with lyrics that are performed either in part or entirely in African tongue including Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African inspiration is also noticeable in choreography, with many of the dances showing off the fluidity of Bali-inspired choreography.

The regalia, song composition, and superb acting all work in harmony to carry out an stunning musical.
