Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name, Les Misérables, also known as Les Miz, is a sung-through musical with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and a book by Schönberg and Boublil. In 1980, Robert Hossein directed the Paris premiere of the original French musical. With lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and production design by Cameron Mackintosh, its English-language version has been running in London since October 1985, making it the longest-running musical in the West End and the second-longest musical globally.
Lés Miserables made its Broadway Theatre debut on March 12, 1987, in New York City. Under the direction of Trevor Nunn and John Caird, the production ran for 6,680 performances, including 11 previews, before closing on May 18, 2003. Twelve Tony Awards were nominated for the production, and it won eight of them, including Best Musical. Since its debut, the play has been translated into 22 languages and produced in over 40 countries worldwide.
Audiences follow the tale of escaped convict Jean Valjean, who succeeds in creating a new life for himself and his adoptive daughter Cosette, against a backdrop of seething insurrection. But, Javert, the relentless police investigator who has been pursuing Valjean for twenty years, is closing up on him, so his newfound contentment is short-lived. In this epic tale of unrequited love, forgiveness, and the enduring strength of the human spirit, all of the characters are caught up in the turmoil that breaks out on Paris’ streets when Valjean’s past finally catches up with him.

“Les Misérables’ defining trait in musical theater canon is its vastness. The musical is epic in every sense of the word, and this touring production’s technical elements meet that reputation – with immersive projects and a set of interlocking tenements representing the world of Paris’ underclass. The second act’s barricades thrill as the set and lighting convey the terror flashing through the minds of young revolutionaries.”
They continued on, praising the leading man of the show: “The show is carried on Nick Cartell’s capable shoulders as convict-turned-mayor Jean Valjean – with soaring high notes putting the audience in a trance.”
